About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover picture: Rates of reaction of substituted cysteines in the S4 voltage sensor of the hyperpolarization-activated HCN1 channel for external (top) and internal (bottom) MTSET application. A large stretch of buried residues (gray spheres, left {alpha}-helix) becomes internally accessible (red spheres, right {alpha}-helix) in the open state, whereas accessibility of external residues (blue spheres) is state independent, suggesting an expansion of an internal gating canal surrounding S4 during opening. See related article by Bell, D.C., H. Yao, R. Saenger, J.H. Riley, and S.A. Siegelbaum, pp. 5-19.
