About the Cover

Cover Figure

The Journal of General Physiology 116 2 Cover picture: Model of the mechanism of activation of phototransduction by 11-cis 13-demethylretinal in bleach-adapted rod photoreceptors. Bleaching light converts the visual pigment to free opsin. The initial noncovalent binding of 11-cis 13-demethylretinal to opsin activates the phototransduction cascade. The equilibrium mixture consists of free opsin, noncovalent 11-cis. 13-demethylretinal · opsin complexes, and 11-cis 13-demethyl rhodopsin. See related article by Corson, D.W., V.J. Kefalov, M.C. Cornwall, and R.K. Crouch, in this issue, pp. 283-297.
