The Journal of General Physiology 115 4 Cover picture: Dual regulation of calcium mobilization by IP3. IP3 both stimulates calcium release by the IP3-R and inhibits feedback inhibition of the IP3-R by released calcium. Procedures that prolong the lifetime of IP3 (GPIP2, 2,3-DPG, GF109203X) diminish the Ca2+-dependent inhibition of IP3-mediated Ca2+ release. This model may explain the regulation of [Ca2+]i oscillations in cells containing IP3gated Ca2+ stores. See related article by Tertyshnikova, S., and A. Fein, in this issue, pp. 481-489.
