About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover picture: Tentative model of structural rearrangements that accompany voltage-dependent activation in Shaker K+ channels. In the resting state, E283, a negatively charged residue in S2, is near the extracellular surface of the protein, whereas R368 and R371 in the S4 voltage sensor are near the intracellular surface. Activation of the channel brings first R368, and then R371 into proximity with E283. See related article by Tiwari-Woodruff, S.K., M.A. Lin, C.T. Schulteis, and D.M. Papazian, in this issue, pp. 123-138.
