About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover picture: Fundamental events in Ca2+ signaling. Ca2+ influx during the opening of a single plasma membrane nonselective cation channel (downward deflection in the current trace) causes a localized increase in Ca2+ indicator fluorescence. The fluorescence increase persists during channel opening, forming a steep spatial gradient as illustrated in the fluorescence intensity profiles. Channel closures result in fluorescence decreases. See related article by Zou, H., L.M. Lifshitz, R.A. Tuft, K.E. Fogarty, and J.J. Singer, in this issue, pp.575-588.
