THE TEMPERATURE CHARACTERISTIC OF RESPIRATION OF AZOTOBACTER

Hans Lineweaver 1, Dean Burk 1, and C. Kenneth Horner 1

1 From the Fertilizer and Fixed Nitrogen Investigations Unit, Bureau of Chemistry and Soils, United States Department of Agriculture, Washington, D. C.

The temperature characteristic of respiration of Azotobacter vinelandii possesses a constant value of 19,330 ± 165 over the temperature range 20–30°C. This value is independent of pH, oxygen tension, age of culture, and other factors within the limits studied.

The optimum temperature of respiration is 34–35°C., with limits at about 10° and 50°C.

Accepted on January 25, 1932
